“Where there is no vision, the people perish,” Proverbs 29:18a
Ever wonder why your walk with Jesus seems empty, unsustainable, or fickle at times? Does your spiritual life feel like you are taking one step forward than two steps backwards? Today’s verse may help you to understand what is actually happening.
A vision is a dream, a revelation, or more basic, an authoritative word. Without an authoritative word, the people “let go” (the meaning of the word “perish.”). We tend to live for the Lord from our own goals and ideals, rather than the authoritative word from God.
We tried serving him out of desire, effort, and ideals. It’s easy to give up on your own goals. But when you live from God’s authoritative word, giving up and letting go becomes quite difficult. It is the difference between what you want and what God commands.
Are you trying to live for the Lord out of what you want and what you think you can accomplish or from His non-negotiable absolute commands?
Here is an example what I mean. If my goal is to read a chapter from the Bible every day, I may or may not accomplish it. Because it is my goal, and I am used to letting myself down and giving into my own desires I will probably not be able to sustain reading the Bible daily.
On the other hand, if I am convinced and consumed by God’s command, I will have to reject him rather than rejecting myself. I can casually break my own standards, but consciously and deliberately saying no to God is far more difficult.
