The great thing about growing in Jesus is only having to obey Him occasionally. We will embrace obedience naturally.
Obeying God begins with intention, as does disobeying. When you chose to obey, you also chose to stiff-arm disobeying. It is all about struggle and choice.
But, developing a spiritual mind means obedience becomes natural and disobedience, unnatural. This is the great shift from flesh to spirit. Paul puts it this way in Romans 8:5. “They that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh.” He adds, “They that are after the spirit (do mind) the things of the spirit.”
Because the need to consciously obey Him slowly diminishes, the shift is not quickly noticed. Jesus’ thoughts have become your thoughts and desires your desires. You are no longer making choices because obedience has become you nature. An athlete would say you are in the zone.
Learning a new skill can be awkward and frustrating. You feel you will never develop the technique. But, if you stick with it you learn to do the task without thinking. No steps needed. It is now natural.
Eventually, you will become aware of the shift. When that happens, you seldom have to obey God consciously. The abandonment of your will for His. A life naturally aligned with God no longer wrestles with obedience or disobedience. Living in the Spirit simply flows.
